Stephen Brownlee accepting his Award in the U.S. Congress

Stephen Brownlee
Irish American Democrats
Young Leaders Award

Irish American Democrats offers an annual award to an Irish American, graduating college senior, who shows the greatest potential to succeed in Government or Public Service

This year's recipient of Irish American Democrats Young Leaders Award is Stephen Brownlee.

Stephen graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in May 2009, with a degree in Government and made the Dean's List on graduation.

Stephen Brownlee is eminently qualified to receive our 2009 award.  He is a serious young man, who impresses us with his reflections on how he can best contribute his talents and skills to improving civic society in America.  He is an outstanding intellect, writer and leader.
We are especially proud to make this award to Stephen because he has both African and Irish heritage. Stephen's grandmother was of the McBain clan of Northern Ireland.

Stephen graduated from Sidwell Friends School in Washington D.C. and then joined the United States Naval Academy.  At the Academy he was a Member of the Academy Football Team. While attending Washington University, Stephen interned at the Obama campaign headquarters in St. Louis.

Stephen's mother was diagnosed with lymphoma when Stephen was 14.  He has written a magnificent essay on his grief and sadness as he helped transport her to her treatments and watched her die
